Apart from randomly posting announcements on my Instagram story, I have never engaged in any advertising whatsoever when it comes to my expanding my fitness business. It's time for me to start learning about advertising in this digital age, so I picked up this book.

What is the story you're telling yourself about this discovery?

The ego boost that comes from owning a business that has perpetuated itself solely through referrals for two years is outweighed by the sense of unease I feel when I acknowledge that I am not doing anything to proactively expand my business virtually.

Describe the specific thoughts and actions that arise for you when you tell yourself this story?

I feel ashamed of myself for not learning about advertising sooner. A week after I lost my job at the nursing home due to new Covid restrictions, I was walking along the beach and a surf camp offered me a job on the spot. So I didn't even have to "advertise" myself with a resume or LinkedIn profile. I soon started my own surf lesson outfit because so many parents started reaching out to teach their kids (this was at the height of Covid when most youth sports camps were shut down). All I had to do was answer the phone and say yes to teaching these kids. Again, no advertising. Then, as I walked around the beach shirtless after surf lessons, people started asking me to help them get into great shape too. With all of this hubristic tooting of my own horn, what I'm trying to illustrate is that I have not been forced to acquire the skill of advertising in this digital age. Now, seeing as how I desire to further expand my business online, I am choosing to develop this skill by reading tomes like this one.

Stepping back from what you have discovered, why has this discovery been extremely positive?

The discovery that I have been merely lucky with my business so far has been extremely positive because it shows me that I must get serious about learning about advertising now. I can't keep relying on luck as a business strategy.

Looking at how positive this discovery trigger has been, what is the singular lesson about life you are taking from this Stack?

The lesson I'm learning from life is that I must be thankful for what I have been given, but also that I must work tirelessly to further develop the gifts that I've been given.
